Elyria man gets five years probation for mortgage fraud scheme
Steven Taylor was sentenced for two counts of wire fraud in 2005 involving homes in Lorain and Elyria, according to the U.S District Court in Cleveland. Taylor also was ordered to pay $144,212.42 in restitution. He could have received up to 16 months in prison.

Toledo-area Chrysler dealers divided on Fiat
Fiat, which now partly owns Chrysler Group, intends to sell Fiat vehicles in the United States by late this year and expects to identify 165 Chrysler dealers to sell them. Toledo is one of the targeted cities, but only one of three Toledo-area dealers seems likely to pursue a Fiat dealership.

Fraud indictments reveal scheme that devastated neighborhoods, government contends
Youngstown attorney William C. Helbley and six others were indicted as part of a mortgage scheme that the government says defrauded lenders of more than $7.5 million in loans. The defendants are charged with 48 counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Gov. Ted Strickland will have plenty of options when selecting a seven-member commission to oversee Ohio's fledgling casino industry. Nearly 60 people already have submitted applications or résumés for the $60,000-a-year positions.

Lorain County Community College enters high-tech niche thanks to $5.5 million grant
The college received the money -- the largest of six grants totaling $17 million given to Ohio universities and organizations by the Wright Center for Sensor Systems Engineering. Most of the grant money will be used to pay for specialized equipment to use in testing products.

Ohio's stimulus funds above average
Federal spending last year was up 16% across the country, thanks to funds from the economic stimulus bill, according to a new census report. Ohio got 19% more than in 2008. Still, federal spending in the state of $9,354 per person was below the national average of $10,548.

American Greetings says it hasn't made decision on whether to leave Brooklyn
American Greetings leaders, unhappy that Brooklyn voters last spring raised the city's income tax 25%, said they hope to have a decision by fall. They told employees Jan. 6 they are exploring moving the headquarters and 2,000 employees to another city or state with lower taxes.

Cleveland officials satisfied with Continental's explanation of document suggesting cuts
While Cleveland Hopkins International Airport would be able to pay off millions of dollars in debt even if Continental Airlines drastically cut flights after merging with United Airlines, city officials remain optimistic that Continental will maintain a large presence at the city-owned airport.

Continental Airlines document suggests huge cuts in Hopkins flights
A preliminary analysis by Continental Airlines said that flights on its mainline jets at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport could drop by more than half, from 42 average daily departures to 20, in a merger between Continental and United.
