Summa Health System plans to spend $65 million to upgrade its network of emergency services.

Under the plan, Summa will build new, freestanding emergency departments at Summa Health Centers at Green and Lake Medina. Emergency departments at Summa's Akron City, Barberton and Wadsworth-Rittman hospitals also will be expanded.

Construction will begin next month at Akron City Hospital, where the ER department's size will increase to 84,000 square feet and 75 beds, up from 19,000 square feet and 43 beds. The rooms will be private and more radiology equipment will be added to the department.

Construction plans are still in the works for the emergency departments in Barberton, Green, Lake Medina and Wadsworth. The Green and Lake Medina emergency departments are expected to open in 2011.
