Springing back to life

  • Metro Bar + Kitchen, which formerly was the Metropolitan Café, is hosting a job fair at 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the restaurant, which is in Cleveland's Warehouse District. The establishment closed Jan. 1 and is undergoing a $500,000 renovation and upgrade. It's scheduled to reopen later this month.

“Having been a part of this historic downtown neighborhood for more than 10 years, we feel that now is the best time to update the restaurant to better reflect the urban chic atmosphere and sophistication of the Cleveland food scene,” said Joe Saccone, co-owner of Hyde Park Restaurant Group, in a statement. “We look forward to showing our regular guests and new visitors the fresh new look and feel of the restaurant very soon.”

Executive Chef David Culi is developing the restaurant's new menu concept.

  • LaBella Cupcakes, an online boutique cupcake business based in Cleveland, is looking for sponsors to help it move from its current home bakery to a space at Kamms Corners in Cleveland, near Fairview Hospital.

In return, the business will pay sponsors in cupcakes along with a sponsorship mention on a plaque that will be located inside the bakery (So if you donate $10 and the cupcakes are $2.50 each, the shop will give you four cupcakes).

As of today, owner Laura Williams, had raised $622 toward a $50,000 goal, which she hopes to reach by April 30. Ms. Williams said if the goal is not reached by then, sponsors' money promptly will be returned.

Ms. Williams opened the web-based cupcake bakery last September after a corporate job loss, and “it's been a whirlwind of excitement. I have been baking, taking orders, delivering and running the bakery all from my home. … As with any new business, start-up funding is a little tough to get when you are first starting out,” she says on her web site.

Also beginning today, LaBella Cupcakes will deliver on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

  • AMP 150 has a new promotion: Bring your own bottle of wine for dinner, and the corkage fee is $10 per bottle. AMP 150 is a swanky 200-seat restaurant and bar that features all menu items under $20. It is located in the Cleveland Airport Marriott on West 150th Street.

  • A group of Cuyahoga Community College students hosted on March 6 at Alanbe Food Outlet in Cleveland a soft launch for the Central Community Co-op, a business they created to provide hope and opportunity for residents living in Cleveland's Central Community. The co-op gives residents access to fresh fruits and vegetables, use of the community college's recreation center and access to free nutritional education classes. The co-op was created by students enrolled in a special topics class at the Metropolitan Campus designed to teach them how to build a successful business model. After doing extensive research, the students determined there is a strong need in the Central Community for healthier food options and access to nutritional education.

  • Local restaurant author Michael Ruhlman is mentioned in a Los Angeles Times story about a new passion for the pig, which explores new tastes for pork parts that once would've been thrown out, including ears, tails and trotters.

  • Hey Forbes, eat this.

Several Northeast Ohioans, including Iron Chef and local restaurateur Michael Symon, were mentioned in this March 2 Associated Content story: “Cleveland: The ‘Most Miserable' City Strikes Back."

According to the story, which summarizes through anecdotes the locals' ire at Forbes magazine for the inaccurate label, Chef Symon was among the first to “vent his vitriol to the social medias” after the Forbes article hit the web.

“"Forbes magazine can kiss my (expletive)!" (I)f these (expletive) would come to the cities they choose to write about..."Mr. Symon posted to his Twitter and Facebook page, to which he scored more than 2,000 “likes” and plenty of comments.

Another local blogger posted a comment: "(I) shake my fist at you, Forbes magazine, because I love everything about Cleveland and I'm nowhere, NOWHERE, near miserable. So quit being so hard on the city that I love to call home before I have to call LeBron to come kick your (expletive)."

Speaking of battles, Chef Symon last night on the Food Network's “Iron Chef America” handily beat his challenger, Chef Spike Mendohlson from Washington, D.C. Not surprising — the secret ingredient was prosciutto.

  • What local chefs and other Northeast Ohio foodies have been saying lately on Twitter:
