Ulmer & Berne LLP is making “an aggressive push” into Chicago, the firm said, by signing a lease that allows room to more than triple the number of employees in its Chicago office.

The firm, which is headquartered in Cleveland and has eight attorneys in Chicago, has signed a lease for more than 18,000 square feet in the Citigroup Center, an office that can accommodate 30 attorneys and their support staff. Ulmer & Berne is scheduled to move into the new space in April.

The firm started the Chicago office in 2001 with two attorneys and added six attorneys last September.

With the move, the firm is positioning itself for significant growth, it said in a statement. Managing partner Kip Reader said the firm is “perfectly positioned to provide our clients with superior legal counsel at a much better value than many Chicago firms are able to offer.”

He noted that the firm did not lay off any attorneys through 2009 and said he anticipates an “even stronger year” in 2010.
