Invacare Corp. (NYSE: IVC) has reported improved fourth-quarter results compared with the like period last year.

The provider of wheelchairs, portable oxygen and other home health care equipment said its net income in the quarter rose 6.5%, to $17.6 million, or 55 cents a share, from $16.6 million, or 52 cents a share, in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Results in the latest fourth quarter included asset writedowns totaling $7.4 million and a writedown of $2.9 million for deferred debt financing fees.

Sales at Invacare increased more than 4%, to $448.6 million from $430.4 million.
