Tom Ganley officially will announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate this afternoon at a speech in his hometown of Brecksville.

The 65-year-old auto dealer and political novice talked openly earlier this year of his desire to vie for the seat Republican George Voinovich will vacate. Mr. Ganley, a Republican, will be joining a crowded field that includes former Republican U.S. Rep. Rob Portman of Cincinnati and two Democrats, Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher and Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner.

The Ganley Auto Group has been the largest dealership group in Northeast Ohio, though it is expected to lose several of its 33 franchises due to the restructuring of the auto industry.

Mr. Ganley has said that his name awareness and his willingness to finance his own campaign will help him overcome the support from the Republican Party establishment that has gone to Mr. Portman.
